Each year our roomies across the pond take a break from the bingo halls for a day of epic proportions – Super Bowl Sunday. Now you think a day of football would be all about…well..football but you’d be wrong! You see, it may be the pigskin that brings everyone together, but this day is really about three things:
Food. Glorious Food.
Like movies need popcorn the get the full enjoyment, Super Bowl Sunday needs food – and lots of it. Americans order double the amount of pizza today than any other day of the year and that’s just the start. An astounding 13 million kilos of crisps are munched along with 3,600,000 kilos of chicken wings. I guess the big game needs some big food!
The Hallmark Half-Time Show
During half time, it’s showtime for some of the biggest talent in the music industry. Famous acts over the years have included Michael Jackson, Madonna, U2 and Bruce Springsteen to name but a few.
The show has even had its fair share of controversy with the now infamous “wardrobe malfunction suffered by Janet Jackson in 2004 and who could forget the unflattering photos Beyonce tried(and failed) to have removed from the internet?
With an average viewership of 111 million people every year, advertisers are chomping at the bit to showcase their wares to the masses. From the memorable “1984” commercial from Apple to Budweiser’s “Clysendales”, these 30-second bits cost upwards of $4 million to air! But I’m sure it make up for it when they’re the topic around the water cooler the next day!
With the time difference it can be a little difficult for us in the UK and Europe to enjoy Super Bowl Sunday but why not go wild and order some pizza and join in for some pre-show fun before bed!
